Hope-Filled Sunday!
Happy Sunday! Here’s some encouragement for your week.
Time to rest. What a lovely concept. However, is it something that’s truly possible in today’s fast-paced society? Is taking time to rest (our bodies and minds) something most people do on a regular basis? I know for me, the answer is, sadly, no, despite the fact that my body often tells me that I need to take a break, slow down, and rest. Society often makes us feel that we have to work, work, work, since it’s the only way to show our value and be viewed as productive. The Bible, however, tells us something different.
Work is a necessary part of life, and it’s even referenced in the Bible (some examples include Col. 3:23 and Gen. 2:15). However, in today’s verse, Solomon talks about how meaningless work can be, especially when our minds never switch off so we can rest. It can feel impossible to do so because our work seems endless. Yet, in the end, God is our Provider. He’s the giver of all things, including work … and rest. It’s important to remember another truth Solomon shared in Ecc. 2:25, which states, “Â for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” We can still work diligently, but it’s important to know who we’re working for (Col. 3:23) and give ourselves permission to build times of rest into our day. Never forget what Jesus said in Matthew 11:28:Â
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Share on X
Lord, help me remember that it’s okay to rest because You will bring meaning and purpose to all my labors, even when my work isn’t “finished.” Amen.
