Album Review

In case you aren't familiar with Anne Wilson (who happens to me my new favorite artist), I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to her (and give you a chance to win an autographed CD!). Share on X

I first heard Anne Wilson’s song “My Jesus” in 2021, and it’s been one of my go-to songs ever since. If you haven’t heard it, you can check out the official video here:  https://youtu.be/FW5o2uBeMWQ

Just for stopping by my blog, you have the chance to win an autographed CD!! You can enter through this Rafflecopter link at the end of this post. (Contest ends May 3, 2022.)

Anne’s debut album, “My Jesus,” released April 22nd! Anne is the first female solo artist to have her debut single reach #1 on the Billboard Christian Airplay chart, and her debut single “My Jesus” was the longest #1 single on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart of 2021 at 7 weeks total. It was also #1 on Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 and #19 on the Rolling Stone Top 25 Trending charts. Anne Wilson was featured as Billboard’s October 2021 Chartbreaker Artist in their 21 Under 21 issue. And “My Jesus” was nominated for a (very well-deserved!) 2022 Billboard Music Award for “Top Christian Song” against Kayne West. You can find out if she wins by watching the live coast-to-coast broadcast on May 15 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC. It will also stream live on Peacock.

I was honored to watch the virtual album release on April 27, 2022, and I was blown away! It was so well done that I felt like I was right there in the room with Anne. It was also awesome to see her receive some of her recently earned reward. Trust me when I say her songs will have you worshipping God and tapping your feet. You can’t help but feel His Spirit at work!

Here’s the setlist (and my thoughts on them), as well as the link to purchase/stream the album: https://annewilson.lnk.to/MyJesus0F!MN

Album Track Info: (Those with * are ones performed during the livestream.)
1. Prelude (Scatter)
2. Scatter – Great opening song that’s a reminder that our battles belong to the Lord!
*3. My Jesus – This song was written after the loss of her brother. If you’ve dealt with loss, this song can be a healing balm.
*4. Devil – This is one of my favorite songs on the album, and it was the opening song for the livestream. It’s a rockin’ song with a bit of a country vibe to it, and it’s a wonderful reminder that Jesus came out of the grave to bring us life (and, in the process, death to the devil).
*5. Sunday Sermons – If you grew up in the church, you’ll relate to this guitar-driven song that states, “Devil gon’ try and take me out of that church, but you can’t take the church out of me.”
*6. Hey Girl – This is such a fun song, and Anne sang it at the livestream. It felt like you were sitting chatting with her and a bunch of girlfriends. It’s a reminder that we’re God’s daughters and to look to Him for our identity. This may be a much-needed reminder for many.
7. This House – This song reminded me that we will have trials in life, but if you stand on the Word of the Lord, you will stand firm. (Otherwise, “This house gonna fall.”)
8. Mansions – This is a song that reminds the listener that the Lord has room for us in His many rooms, and we’ll be reunited with love ones and always belong.
*9. Mamas (with Hillary Scott) – This is a heartfelt song with Hillary Scott, who you may know from the country band Lady A. I saw this duet at the livestream, and their harmonies were spot-on! Beautiful song overall.
*10. No Place Like Home – Before this song in the livestream, Anne spoke of her memories at her grandparents’ farm in Kentucky, where she and her brother spent a lot of time while growing up. I, too, spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ farm (though it wasn’t in Kentucky!), so I found it quite relatable in many ways. It brought back some great memories.
11. God Thing – This song has a country vibe to it (as do some of the other songs), and it’s a reminder of how God provides what we need.
12. That’s What We Need – I love the reminder in this song that there’s only one truth that sets us free: Jesus.
13. Something About That Name – This song is a peace-filled, tender song about the most wonderful name ever: Jesus.
14. Closer To God – If you’ve ever felt unworthy, this song is a wonderful reminder that God will meet us right where we are, right as we are.
15. My Jesus (feat. Crowder) – This is an alternate version of “My Jesus” with another popular Christian artist that I love, David Crowder. I love that I get my favorite song twice on the album, and it’s the perfect way to close out the album.

While I love the entire album, my favorite songs are “My Jesus,” “Devil,” “Sunday Sermons,” and “Scatter.” The past year has been challenging in many ways, and “My Jesus” has been one of the top songs I have gone to for encouragement on those difficult or challenging days. Here’s a sample of the lyrics from “My Jesus” to give you an idea of what I’m talking about:

“Are you past the point of weary?
Is your burden weighin’ heavy?
Is it all too much to carry?
Let me tell you ’bout my Jesus
Do you feel that empty feeling?
‘Cause shame’s done all its stealin’
And you’re desperate for some healin’
Let me tell you ’bout my Jesus
He makes a way where there ain’t no way
Rises up from an empty grave
Ain’t no sinner that He can’t save
Let me tell you ’bout my Jesus
His love is strong and His grace is free
And the good news is I know that He
Can do for you what He’s done for me
Let me tell you ’bout my Jesus
And let my Jesus change your life.”
Can I get an Amen?! Are those words a comforting reminder or what? And that’s just one song on the album. I believe you’ll feel God close by as you listen to the other songs, as well.

About Anne…

Singer/songwriter Anne Wilson knows the healing power of music firsthand. The lyrics of Hillsong Worship’s “What A Beautiful Name” became a lifeline for the Lexington, Kentucky native after her brother was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 23. Although she spent much of her childhood behind a piano, Wilson sang in front of an audience for the first time at her brother’s funeral. It was at that moment that she realized what she was born to do. A video of her moving performance organically circulated, eventually landing her a record deal. With a mesmerizing voice and a visible hunger for Jesus, the 20-year-old relies on personal journal entries and time spent in nature for songwriting inspiration. Wilson’s introductory track, “My Jesus”—which she co-wrote with Jeff Pardo and Matthew West—is a warm invitation to experience her Savior in the same intimate way she knows Him. She released a debut three-track single—also titled My Jesus—for Capitol Christian Music Group in early 2021 and followed it up with a live EP, My Jesus (Live in Nashville). Her song, “My Jesus,” charted on the Spotify Viral 50, Shazam Top 200, and Rolling Stone Top 25 Trending charts. Her story was also featured with the Religion News Service and The Washington Post. She made her Opry debut on the iconic stage in September 2021. Wilson was featured in Billboard Magazine as the October 2021 Chartbreaker artist.

The radio station I listen to while driving always plays My Jesus–the lyrics sing over and over in my head long afterward. Recently, I saw a church sign out front that quoted My Jesus and I knew immediately where the quote came from. Thank you for the chance to win a copy!

  3. Megan

Whenever “My Jesus” plays on the car radio, I turn up the volume and sing along. The song’s message is a much-needed reminder to myself sometimes.
