Thankful Thursday

Welcome to Thankful Thursday: His Encouragement. I am blessed to be part of a group of bloggers who’ll be sharing a bit of encouragement through Scripture verses. I hope this post blesses you as you finish the week and that you find peace, strength, and comfort in the Lord.

Mark 4:39-41

This verse in Mark is a reminder that fear is not new. The disciples also struggled with it. And, like now, their fear was valid and not an irrational over-exaggeration.

As you can see, the disciples were concerned. But Jesus was not. In fact, He was asleep … serene, in sharp contrast to the chaos going on around them. (Chaos. Sound familiar?) I would guess that the disciples were quite perplexed, wondering how Jesus could be so calm when danger was so close by.He asked his disciples, “Why are you afraid?” That’s a question we should ask ourselves. When they woke Jesus, all He had to do was say, “Be still!” to the waves, and the waves obeyed. Then He asked his disciples, “Why are you afraid?”

That’s a question we should ask ourselves.

It’s all-too-easy to be fearful amid the Covid-19 Pandemic. It’s unfamiliar, which can be scary, and it changes by the day and even minute. Our minds may jump to the worst-case scenarios. So many questions, and even the experts can’t provide solid, fact-based answers, as this is something no one has ever encountered before.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s unfamiliar to the Lord. What’s unknown to us is not unknown to Him.

When we’re fearful, we’re focusing on the waves around us. But, through faith, we can shift our focus to Jesus. We may need to refocus multiple times throughout the day, and that’s okay. Jesus won’t think less of us for doing so. It’s normal to be afraid, but we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be defined by that fear. The Lord has control over every storm … even Covid-19.
