Tuesday Tip

For today’s Tuesday Tip, I’d like to share something linked to my Life with Chronic Pain and Illness post from last Friday (October 3, 2025). In this case, I’m sharing a few tips for self-advocacy.

Self-advocacy sometimes gets a bad rap, but there’s really no reason for that. It’s speaking up for yourself and what your body needs, asking questions, setting boundaries, and refusing to be dismissed. Self-advocacy is a powerful tool that it often underutilized. It’s important, and it’s important for those living with chronic pain and illness to start doing more often (no matter how uncomfortable it might be). Oh, and by the way, I’m listing these as a reminder for myself, too. This is an area I need to work on, and perhaps you do, as well.

  • Ask questions! This is important to confirm that your understand your condition, their treatment plan, etc.
  • Learn all you can about your diagnoses.
  • Take notes with you to appointments (and also take them during the appointment).
  • If needed, don’t hesitate to ask for a second opinion.
  • Speak up about your needs and preferences.
  • Be persistent in follow-ups and questions.
  • Set personal boundaries.

Taking someone with you as a support system can be helpful, as well. You have a right to be heard and, more importantly, listened to.

Is self-advocacy easy for you, or is it a work in progress?

I hope you have a low-pain day. Gentle hugs your way.
